Elk Buddies by Ingrid Lockhart

December 2024 - Elk Buddies

About the Image(s)

This image was taken out of my kitchen window with my Sony RX 10,iv. In postprocessing, I cropped the image, applied Topaz AI Sharpen, used Photoshop CC levels to create more contrast, and cleaned up some debris along the edges.

Hi Ingrid,

Wow - what a view you must have from your kitchen window!

I love the texture in the fur and that great expression in the elk on the left.

My only suggestion is that it might just be a bit too "cool". That's a lot of blue snow. We don't get a lot of that white stuff here in Virginia, so maybe it really IS that blue. Just something to consider.

Great shot!

Thanks, Karen. I'll try running a levels adjustment on this image to see if it corrects the blue hue on the snow.., Happy Holidays!   Posted: 12/21/2024 16:32:35

Ok I'm impressed, a bit different to our kitchen window.

Clarity and detail in the foreground is handled very well, with the eye being drawn to the Elk looking straight at the camera.

Perhaps the background could be blurred fractionally to bring more attention to the subject. Great opportunity for the shot.   Posted: 12/16/2024 05:23:55

Thanks, Tom! I'll try blurring the background a bit to see if it is an improvement.

Wish you hadn't cropped so close. Are there 3 female elk? Bit of a muddle. Different vantage point (go outside or to another window?) would have enabled you to separate them a little. Blue tones can be fixed easily in Photoshop.
Wish we would get some snow this winter.   Posted: 12/16/2024 22:03:52

Hi Leslie. Thanks for taking the time to evaluate my Elk image. I cropped close since their butts didn't seem to add anything, but the original image does have the whole of the elks, so I can try including the whole of the trio to see if it's better. As far as separation between the three, the story I wanted to portray is their snuggling together for warmth, and I doubt I'd be able to separate them from a different angle anyway. Hi Ingrid,
You captured a warm moment on a cold day. Well done. I agree with some of the others recommendations.
Best regards,
