The Colosseum by Erin Browne

November 2024 - The Colosseum

About the Image(s)

Looking back through older photos from a school trip to Rome (and wishing I had taken a full frame camera!) I like this one of the Colosseum while we were waiting outside in line. The sky was a perfect shade of blue, and I thought it was an interesting angle to capture some of the magnitude and without all the thousands of people there to visit. Very little in post processing - shot at 1/320 f/8 iso100

Hi Erin. For me that angle of view works very well, with the capture of the tone and texture of the stonework, against the smooth flat sky with the soft clouds, is also appealing. The shadow areas inside the first arch is also handled very well. Not much I can offer I like the image as it is presented.   Posted: 11/08/2024 06:03:59

Hi Erin,
I like that you found your own way to capture a famous landmark.

Hi Erin - Looks like an image I would see in a travel catalog! Great angle of an iconic venue. Not a person in site is a minor miracle . . . it almost appears to be missing something :) In this case, the composition you chose provides a feeling that portrays how massive this building is and the viewer knows immediately what they are seeing. I like the texture and as Tom mentioned, the treatment of the shadow areas and the offset against that sky provide depth and balance. No suggestions.   Posted: 11/11/2024 23:39:40

Hi Erin,
Greetings my friend.
An exceptional angle to be seen of the colosseum. The light, the colors and the composition, all seems pretty complementing to each other. Thank you for sharing.
Cheers.

Hi Erin. This is a great architectural image and it provides a unique viewpoint that I've never seen before with the Colosseum. The building is in perfect focus, highlighting the striking detail of the masonry. I also love the hint of the cloud in the sky, although I might clone out the cloud tip on the right edge, which catches the viewer's eye unnecessarily. Thanks for sharing this. It makes me realize that it's been almost 30 years since I last visited Italy and now I want to go again!   Posted: 11/19/2024 18:20:11

Reviewing all these photos makes me want to go back again too!
I think you're right about that cloud, I'll definitely clone it out thanks!   Posted: 11/21/2024 13:35:23

Hi Erin,

Great architectural image! As other had said, you captured the wonderful texture and juxtaposed that against those soft sky.

The only suggestion I would make is to try a crop a bit off the right side to meet the bottom edge of the wall, creating a triangle of blue sky.

Great capture!
