Floral Soliloquy by Chris Reinecker

October 2026 - Floral Soliloquy

About the Image(s)

I found this dramatic composition in the garden. A vivid burst of life emerging from darkness, quite theatrical and slightly mysterious. 75mm f4 to focus on the flower.

This is dramatic and beautiful. The colors of the flower pop against the green of the leaves, with the large leaf leading the eye to the subject with its center vein. I would clone out or darken the yellow bud on the top right, to me it competes with the main bloom.   Posted: 10/04/2026 18:02:31

Thank you so much. I thought about removing the bud, but I think it emphasizes the diagonal direction of the flower.   Posted: 10/05/2026 21:56:49

Chris, welcome to the group, if I haven't said so already.
I like the way the leaf of the lily naturally guides the viewer's eye to the subject, the flower, and then the scene fades into black. Without the "As Shot" it's difficult to tell if this was product of the f4 aperture or enhanced in post. Either way, well done. Excellent color contrast with the two primary colors, red and yellow, balanced by the secondary green. Nature is really good at that but good eye for recognizing it.
Did you rotate the image? No? Consider rotating 90* counter clockwise so the flower grows up, rather than to the side.
I respectively disagree with Barbara. I would not clone out the yellow bloom but I might try toning it down a tad. Minor issue though.
Overall, well done.   Posted: 10/05/2026 00:17:54

Thank you. Not entirely sure if it was f4 as this was done with an 75mm f2 Summicron manual lens and the f stop is just estimated on an M11 and often wrong. I removed some leaves from the black areas to focus on the large green leave. Didn't have a tripod with me otherwise I probably would have selected to capture all in focus.   Posted: 10/05/2026 21:53:24

My view on the yellow bud, top right, is that it should be there. It provides a diagonal angle and therefore some dynamism to the flower. It is sharp where it needs to be which is what matters. I like the stem coming from the left and the veins of the leaf from the top left, as they lead your eye to the actual flower itself.   Posted: 10/07/2026 14:35:08
