About the Image(s)

This was an assignment in my Camera Club. I did not take the photo of the Sequoia, but everything else is mine.
I thought the photo was not pretty and I remembered an old picture of my Granddaughter, Ally, peeking through some fall color and I took that picture. I cropped her face and laid it on a single layer in Photoshop, trying to put it in the right place so that when I laid the Sequoia over her, and erased the hole in the middle of the tree, her face would appear. This took multiple attempts and I finally succeeded !
The background bothered me so I took a picture of colorful fall trees at Mammoth, CA., that I took a few years ago. I placed the layer of the tree with Ally in it, over the Colorful trees, and added a layer mask so I could erase it and the leaves would be there. Blue sky appeared in the upper right corner so I took the fall color image, flipped it horizontally, and laid the image over that. I erased again at the right corner, and the yellow leaves were revealed. Then I had to do a lot of fixing up the picture to make it look more realistic. I like the final result and sent it in, with five other images we had to doctor up. I'm looking forward to our Club Meeting on Tuesday to see what people did with the six images. This was frustrating, but I learned a lot and it was fun. Any comments appreciated; this was just a fun exercise.

It IS a fun image Donna and quite a tricky assignment it would seem. I'm no Photoshop expert - I use it but am still learning and like you for this image, need multiple attempts to achieve what I want to achieve.
The autumn (sorry - fall) colours are gorgeous and match the tones in the circle where Ally's face is and her smile is so engaging it makes me want to smile too. Despite the strength of the foliage colours and the sequoia trunk, Ally's face is the hero of the image.
I find the flower down the left side of her face distracting and if there is a way of removing it without distorting her happy face it would improve the image overall I think.
Well done for a creative concept.

Yes, I did try to remove the leaf but it didn't work. The original picture of her had that leaf in it, and I thought it tied her face to the background colors.
And yes, we do use the word "autumn". LOL.
Thanks for your comments.   Posted: 09/10/2023 17:26:31

Wow, Donna, this was quite an assignment. You did a great job! What a great image of your granddaughter. Great smile! I find the fall leaves on the side of her face distracting, but it would be difficult to clone the leaves out. It would be fun to see what other members of your club did with the image.

Yes, I did get the same comment from my camera club - to get rid of the leaves by her face. But I don't know if I can do that. I'll try. Thanks, Diana !!! It was amazing some of the techniques that people in my camera club use, which I've never heard of -- in Lightroom and Photoshop. Regenerative Fill, or something like that. I have no idea what that is.   Posted: 09/16/2023 14:28:06

Donna, did you google -Regenerative Fill. There is a need video put out by Adobe I just watched. I am going to have to try it... Now you gave me something to explore.   Posted: 09/16/2023 14:46:32

It sounds amazingly complex. I do like the face in the middle o th the tree - it looks like a mirror. Someday I might be able to understand enough of PS to do it. Maybe. At any event, the line between the yellow leaves in the lower middle of the left and the truck needs to be blurred -- it is far to sharp. It should be like the line between the leaves and the tree in the upper part of the image.   Posted: 09/18/2023 12:58:51
