About the Image(s)

Canon EOS R6 M2, f/8, 1/100 sec, ISO 320, Canon EF Lens 24-105 mm @ 92 mm
This conceptual portrait explores the mysterious bond between a woman and her black cat. By matching their golden eyes, I sought to create an immediate visual connection that suggests they share more than simple companionship. Using dramatic lighting and a dark color palette, I aimed to evoke an atmosphere of elegance, mystery, and quiet power. The image invites viewers to create their own narrative while reflecting on the symbolism often associated with black cats and the unknown. Your comments and critiques are most welcome.

Wow, I love the eyes on the cat !!! The yellow makes the cat really intriguing and - not evil - but a tad spooky. What I'm not crazy about is the eyes in the woman -- I would have made them green or something that would have been found in a cat ! And I like the skull in your original image but you removed it; I think it would be great to still have it there. I like what you did to the background; good color and texture there. Yes, I think I would have left a little more space on the right side of the woman - she's scrunched up against the right side of the frame. But hey, it's a great shot and I think it's fine left as is, you wanted to connect the two souls and that's what happened.   Posted: 07/07/2026 08:07:07

Hi Dona, thank you for your thoughtful comments and suggestion. I completely agree that the lady needs a little more space on the right, which would give the composition a better sense of balance. I really appreciate your feedback.   Posted: 07/08/2026 09:58:17

Hi Frans -
I am curious about your process. So, you started with the props in your original and then decided to change it? Your final image, as Donna stated, is successful in reaching the proposed goal you had. I think your eye choice is very good and effective for what you wanted to achieve. I like the changes you made to the original. The original does seem to do more storytelling, but I like the warmer tones in your final, and I like the change in background. The crop is well composed, and you have created a dark, yet beautiful portrait.   Posted: 07/08/2026 00:12:23

Hi Susan, thank you for your interest. The model was wearing "cat-eye" contact lenses during the shoot. Unfortunately, the lenses had rotated out of position, so I corrected their orientation in post-processing. I then duplicated the corrected lens and used it to replace the cat's eyes, creating a visual connection between the two. The background itself was left unchanged; I simply darkened it to give the lady and the cat a more mystical and dramatic presence.   Posted: 07/08/2026 10:05:48

Very interesting image. I think the lady + cat are strong enough to include the skull -- without the railing. However, your crop is probably better. Thanks for the explanation.   Posted: 07/12/2026 01:32:49
