Spring Vortex by Doug Wolters

April 2026 - Spring Vortex

About the Image(s)

Shot with an Olympus OM 1, 60 Macro lens, 1/250 sec. at f/ 3.5, ISO 1250. I was very pleased, when I looked at this image on the computer that the top was in focus. So often when shooting so open the result is an almost good image. The tulip is in my yard. You may yet see another picture of it.

I would not have picked this as a tulip Doug. Because of the pearlescent effect, I would have guessed at a sea shell of some sort.
Regardless, it is largely abstract and the centre clarity morphing to softness makes an interesting and appealing image. The soft greens also work well with the central orange/golds.
Nicely seen and photographed.   Posted: 04/11/2026 05:30:11

I love the colors and textures. It does make it difficult to know what it is because of the highlights that make it look like a seashell of some kind.
I wonder if you cropped in real tight, it could be more of an abstract, and change the title? Here's a possibilty I thought of, maybe you could play with it some more.
I think if you'd had more in focus, and maybe used a light diffuser, you could have had a totally different image. Just ideas for you.   Posted: 04/11/2026 07:37:20

Doug, I think Donna is on to something that you were thinking unconsciously. You shoot many closeups, with limited DOF and tightly cropped that then you turn into abstracts. You did pick the subject and photographed well.

I wouldn't have recognized it as a tulip if you hadn't mentioned it. I really like your original approach-the soft surroundings gently drawing the eye toward a sharp center. We share a similar taste in that style. That said, this version still has its own charm, and I wouldn't change anything. Nice work!   Posted: 04/13/2026 02:06:21

I appreciate your subject, as I concentrate on many florals too. I like the abstract vision you have created of the subject. The composition feels balanced. I like the sense of swirling movement that you have captured as the focus softens. I think you have a successful and pleasing image.   Posted: 04/14/2026 04:33:13
