The Dregs of Summer by Mark Aksoy

April 2025 - The Dregs of Summer

About the Image(s)

This image was taken during a backyard excursion last November to capture some macro views, and these dead leaves caught my attention. I photographed handheld with my D750 Nikon plus Tamron SP 90mm macro lens at 90 mm, f/20, 1/160 sec, IOS800 and 3 stops under the meter reading. In Lightroom, I adjusted Exposure, Highlights, Clarity and Vibrance. In Photoshop, I cropped the image and toned down background details.

The first thing that struck me Mark, is the lighting. It is glorious.
Your dark background makes sure that the leaves which are well focussed, get all the attention.
An excellent example of wabi sabi.   Posted: 04/17/2025 09:08:44

Well, Mark, I keep looking at this image and trying to figure out what to say. I admire your nighttime (was it at night?) excursion. What bothers me is that the four leaves are so far apart and I don't know which one to look at. This doesn't strike me as a Macro image. I would concentrate on one of the three leaves and get closer. I like the leaf on the right, because it has the most color and the lighting is perfect. The others, to me, are too bright. The background is really nice. There's a white spot that bothers me between the right leaf and the one to the left of it -- easy to remove. I played with your image and came up with this.   Posted: 04/17/2025 20:31:58

Mark, being a fan of low key images, I really like this. I love the simplicity and detail. Like Donna's also. I did a horizontal flip to make the branch a leading line rather than taking you out of the image. Well done.   Posted: 04/20/2025 01:40:55
