Diamond Beach, Iceland by Mark Aksoy

March 2025 - Diamond Beach, Iceland

About the Image(s)

Another image from the first traveling day of my Iceland trip last October! Along the coast of Southern Iceland, icebergs break off from Breidamerkurjokull Glacier, float into Glacier Lagoon, and thence out into the open Atlantic. Fragments then wash back up on the black sand shores of Diamond Beach. I had to fight freezing winds to make my way to the water's edge for this image. I photographed handheld with my D750 Nikon plus 24-120mm Nikon lens at 66 mm, f/20, 1/400 sec, ISO 1000. In Lightroom, I adjusted Exposure, Highlights, Clarity and Vibrance. In Photoshop, I cropped the image and cloned out dust spots and distracting details.

Fascinating. I love the blue color of the iceberg chunk, and on the black sandy beach it really stands out. I think your fighting the freezing winds was worth it !
I wonder if you could saturate the reflection of the berg in the ebbing wave, that could make it even better. I would probably crop a bit off the bottom of the image.
Very nice !   Posted: 03/13/2025 00:28:53

The iceberg is definitely the star of the show Mark and I think you have handled the processing well.
Like Donna, I suspect your image may benefit from cropping some of the bottom away.   Posted: 03/13/2025 03:48:36

Mark, a very impressive image. What a nice opportunity for you to visit Iceland. Yes, the iceberg is the star! What a pretty blue. The action of the waves add to the image. You were able to capture it well with the windy conditions and hand-held. Well done!   Posted: 03/13/2025 17:31:28

Great shot. I cropped up from the bottom & in a bit from the left, but I did not like the proportions. Then I gave it more sky. I like the proportions now. What do you think?   Posted: 03/16/2025 19:49:37

Hi Doug, Yes, this is an improvement! The iceberg is more centered and dominant in this revision. Thanks!   Posted: 03/20/2025 22:58:12

A fantastic shot! The textures and contrasts add a new dimension to the image. The blue wave looks frozen. Amazing! Nice capture.   Posted: 03/18/2025 08:17:11
