Seeking Safe Haven for the Night by Donna Sturla

January 2025 - Seeking Safe Haven for the Night

About the Image(s)

I drove north of Sacramento to Marysville, a more rural area, to photograph the Tundra Swans and many geese who travel there in December.
I turned and saw a flock of these birds as the day darkened, and took a shot. I loved the older, deserted buildings below and the eeriness of the shot.
Nikon D 7500 Lens Sigma 150- 500 mm shot at 300 mm, F 7.1, shutter speed 1/1600, ISO 500.
Please critique !

Donna. love this image. Your choice of monochrome really makes it. To me it has great visual impact and interest. The only thing that bothers me are the birds that are cut off on the right and left edges. I fixed it. What do you think?   Posted: 01/13/2025 15:08:19

Thank you, I do think that makes a difference.
How did you do that?

Donna, I did it very carefully some with content aware and others with the cloning tool. Hope you don't mind.   Posted: 01/13/2025 22:10:56

No, I appreciate your suggestion, and I went in to my image and used the bandaid to delete the birds that were at the edges of the picture. Thank you so much!

Donna, I really love this image. There is a very eerie feeling with the birds above and the barns below. The hint of white on the bottom of the birds add just the right touch of brightness. Love the image!!   Posted: 01/15/2025 03:25:38

An interesting and moody shot Donna. Your choice of black and white really add to it's mood. The buildings and fencing below add to the overall image and create perspective and I concur with the other suggestions already made.   Posted: 01/15/2025 08:41:49

Thank you Meredith!
I did what the first gentleman suggested and deleted the birds that were at the edges -- I think that helped.
Isn't this fun, I love editing images !
