Longwood Squirrel by Peter Curcio

December 2024 - Longwood Squirrel

About the Image(s)

This image was taken earlier this week on my first visit to Longwood Gardens during the Christmas season. This was a daytime visit and I am hoping to return during evening hours as the lights are quite stunning. I noticed a lot of birds flocking to this evergreen while on a walking path. When I left the path and went to the other side of the tree I saw what the birds were after and also the squirrel. The photo was taken late morning on a very sunny (but cold) day. It was photographed with a Nikon Zii, with a Nikkor 24-70mm lens at f/4 with an ISO of 400 at 1/80s. Post processing began in Affinity Photo, with clean up in Luminar NEO and finished in PhotoLab.

Really nice Nature image -- not sure what he's eating -- birds' eggs? It almost looks like he's staring at you and daring you to interfere. It's a fun picture; I'm so envious of people who can go to Longwood Gardens !
Peter, I wonder if your monitor is too dark. Because last month and this month your images were appearing overexposed here.
Not sure if others in the group are seeing the same thing as I am -- maybe it's my monitor, yet others' images are fine here.
So if your monitor is set too dark, your images will be too light for other people. Something to look into.
Thank you for all your participation and have a Happy Holiday season !

Excellent clarity on the squirrel's face and especially the eye with an attractive catchlight. It does look as if it has one eye on you whilst concentrating on its food. I was going to suggest lowering your exposure before I read Donna's comments on screen brightness. Either way, the image is a little too bright for me and would be improved by being darkened slightly.   Posted: 12/15/2024 06:27:53

Nice capture. I wonder what that squirrel is eating? Nice clarity and detail. I agree with Donna and Meredith. The image is too bright.   Posted: 12/16/2024 01:06:47

The squirrel is eating bird seed. The tree is actually a feeder for the birds.   Posted: 12/16/2024 01:44:48
