This beautiful little boy was originally photographed in his mother’s arms. I was immediately drawn to his expression- the way he quietly observed everything around him with those wonderful, curious eyes. I captured the moment with my cell phone.
Because I am considering this image for a portrait competition that specifically requires a single-person portrait, I chose to remove his mother and create a composition focused entirely on him.
In my edit, I tried to preserve his natural expression and character. I added subtle directional light to give his face more dimension, gently brightened his eyes and catchlights, retained some natural texture and character in his skin without over-sharpening, and softened and darkened the background. I wanted his eyes, expression, and the beautiful detail and color of his traditional hat to command the viewer’s attention.
I titled the image “Quiet Curiosity” because that is what I see in his expression -- a little boy quietly taking in the world around him.
This is where I need your help. I want to make this the strongest portrait it can be before I submit it. Please tell me what you would change -- crop, lighting, skin tones, background, eyes, color, or anything else you feel would make the portrait stronger. Don’t be afraid to critique it; I want to make it better.

Hi Sophia, he is so cute I am not surprised you wanted to lavish a lot of attention on the image. My first thought was you may have used AI since the background is all replaced and of course the jacket. His left hand is reversed and if so is this within the rules of the portrait competition? I guess I am hoping all is fine on that front since it would be a great entry!   Posted: 10/02/2026 03:28:18

Hi Mark, thank you for your kind words and careful eye. Yes, this version was created with AI assistance. I use AI to explore editing ideas, and I mistakenly attached that version instead of my own edit. I know AI-generated content isn't permitted in the competition, and I've asked Peter to remove it until I upload the correct file. Thank you for catching this, including the issue with his hand! Hi Sophia, Its a very appealing portrait and I have very little to offer on improvements. You said in your comments that you had brightened the eyes and I wonder if that applies to the new version? I realise its easy to mess up eyes but his are very dark and a little bit of visibility on the iris could help. Cheers!   Posted: 10/06/2026 02:36:25

Hi Sophia!
Nice photo! And so cute boy! He's adorable! :-)
As for the competition… As far as I know, almost all photography competitions strictly prohibit using AI to modificate the subjects in a photo, unless it's a competition specifically dedicated to AI in photography. But perhaps yours allows it-it's best to check the rules ;-)   Posted: 10/02/2026 16:13:51

Thanks Natalia.. As I mentioned to Mark I had attached the wrong photo. What are your thoughts about the revised one I posted under my comments to Mark?   Posted: 10/06/2026 02:12:39
