This is Jacob's Ladder on the way up Ben Lomond in Tasmania. It was taken from the road halfway up where these tall spires emerge. With the misty conditions they seemed very forbidding and with help of Gemini I call them "The Gates of Tartarus" Fortunately I was traveling with a slightly wider lens than usual (20mm for astro). Obviously the light was very flat so the contrast has been increased selectively and sharpening applied. The "Original" does not show extensive perspective corrections.

This image immediately draws me in with its mysterious atmosphere. The fog beautifully separates the rock formations, creating depth and a wonderful sense of scale. I also like the black-and-white conversion, which eliminates distractions and emphasizes the dramatic textures and shapes of the cliffs. The title, The Gates of Tartarus, fits the mood perfectly and encourages the viewer's imagination. If I could offer one suggestion, it would be to slightly soften the sharpening in the foreground rocks, as they appear just a touch crisp compared to the soft, ethereal mist. Hi Mark. I like the black and white conversion. I feel it really helps to simplify the image. In terms of your processing, I guess it depends what mood you are going for. Personally, I really like the softness of the mist. I'd even maybe try some more softening to bring that out even more. And as Sophia suggested, backing off the sharpness of the rocks in the foreground a little. I really like the overall mood of the image. Posted: 08/02/2026 05:35:20
