About the Image(s)

This image was taken while bikepacking in Costa Rica. Some of the route was mapped on the beach. I stopped quickly to take the image. The format was JPEG as I wanted to use in camera double magnification to zoom in even closer on the rocks (which only works in JPEG). Therefore, not much editing applied and I thought black and white looks good.

Wow! What a lovely place. Anna, I've never been to Costa Rica, but your image has made me put it on my bucket list. Your use of in-camera double magnification is interesting. I'll definitely look into that.
I like your choice of B&W, but the color version is also wonderful. Your composition and camera position were excellent! Nicely done.
I played a bit with your photograph in an attempt to further highlight the large rock. Your thoughts?

Hi Anna. I also liked the colour version. In terms of the black and white, I think the shadows in the main rocks are just a little too dark. There's not enough separation between them. I'd lift the shadows just a little. I do like the portrait crop. It gives the image a sense of space. I think Pete might have cropped just a little off the top and bottom and I think that does bring the viewpoint more on the rocks. The sky definitely gives the image a moody feel.   Posted: 04/03/2026 00:42:03
Suzanne, good eye - you're right. I did crop the bottom a bit.   Posted: 04/05/2026 17:46:01
Hi Anna, this is a compelling study of the rocks although the sky is arguably more interesting, especially with the contrast in black and white you have applied. I think the shadows on the rock are costing interesting detail and Pete's version shows there is more there that could be developed.   Posted: 04/07/2026 21:20:18
