About the Image(s)

Recently, I decided to explore portrait photography, experimenting with lighting to create depth and emotion. After adjusting the lights multiple times, I finally captured this shot??”one of my best so far. The deep shadows and dramatic contrast give the image a moody, introspective feel, exactly the kind of atmosphere I was aiming for. (Although the jawline could be sharper) This photo was a great learning experience in using light to shape emotion.

Hi Keisha,

A beautiful image and an interesting lighting. I like the moody feel. I think the main focus points should be on the eyes and the front head. The highlight on the cheek is too harsh, blown out so the cheek lost texture, causing too much attention. For my taste, I prefer some light reflection on the shadows.

Keisha, one of the most important things about an image (to me) is its impact when I first see it. Your photograph definitely has IMPACT! I love the fact that you left half of the face in almost total darkness instead of giving it some detail, which is more typical. Well done!

I agree with Xiao that the highlights are a bit harsh, so I played with them in Camera Raw. Your thoughts?

Hi Keisha I think the concept is great and innovative to completely lose the left hand side. I know some people will ask for some shadow detail and if you did then it is a version of a strong concept. Agree with Xiao and Oliver about his cheeks being blown out and also the nose where we have lost skin texture. In this version I applied a low level of noise in Photoshop just to produce some grain that simulates skin texture. Not sure that you will see it...but it does make a difference in my editor   Posted: 05/09/2025 04:24:36

I agree with Pete- your photo has fantastic Impact - for me Impact is Storytelling/Creativity/Composition & Technical- You have it all with the exception of the technical - I believe Pete & Mark did a great job to help you with that! Keep up the great job! Thank you for sharing.   Posted: 05/12/2025 01:07:26

Keisha,
Your image exhibits the silent emotion of the model. I admire the attitude of him not aware of the camera, but looking down in deep thought.   Posted: 05/12/2025 17:05:11
