About the Image(s)

My wife, grandson, dog, and I recently spent two weeks in Ocracoke, N.C. It’s an amazing place. The island is about 15 miles long, and 14 of those miles are national seashore. Thus, only the Southernmost mile has any buildings, homes, stores, etc. This photograph was taken in the early evening. I wanted to show the remarkable emptiness of the island. There is usually no traffic unless the ferry has just arrived, which happens about once an hour.

As you can see, I did a significant amount of editing on the photograph… actually three photographs since it is a three-exposure HDR. My processing was done in Camera Raw.

Data: Canon R5; 24-70mm lens @38mm; 1/125 sec; f/14; ISO 160; handheld.

Hi Oliver,

Wow, so a beautiful image! I like the composition, lighting, and color tone. You did a great job on the editing.

I just feel the electricity poles are too contrasting and causing too much attention.

Thanks for sharing!   Posted: 05/04/2025 19:25:42

Thank you, Xiao! I intentionally left the power poles quite dark since I felt they helped pull the viewer's eye into the background. Hopefully, others will comment on your comment so I can see the overall opinions. Thank you again!

Hi Oliver,

I think the main focus points should be on the car and the far end of the road. So I made some changes to emphasize these points and blur the rest of the parts.

Xiao, I see what you mean! I noticed that you also improved the sky. Very nice. I like your version. Thank you!!

Wow you have breathed some real life into an image that did not appear to offer much. Brilliant!! And interested in the HDR as applied to a moving car. Did you have to do some work there to get it sharp.
Xiao, your approach is really novel! I can't figure out if I like it because its so unusual to have a significantly blurry foreground and midground. At any rate I think I agree the poles are too dominant in what Pete has done but the alternative would be to apply a selective lightening. Or use the +2ev photo in the HDR masked in on the poles.   Posted: 05/09/2025 05:02:47

Peter, I love this image and I am so envious of your editing skills.IMy eye is drawn by the power lines , the sky and then the road /car.The only suggestion I have on your photo is to delete the lines that are coming down to the ground on the first pole.I would also add a bit more pink/Red/purple (the amazing sunsets we see along the coast. Thank you for introducing me to another area of NC   Posted: 05/12/2025 01:46:12

Sophia, I like your suggestion about removing the lines going down from the first pole. Thank you!

Ocracoke is a wonderful place to visit, especially for photographers. I realize it's about 9 hours away from you (including a long ferry ride), but if you go, I'm sure you'll like it.

Oliver,

The mood of this image is enhanced by the sunset and flora. I like the leading lines of the road and the telephone lines. Not sure if the approaching vehicle adds to the scene.   Posted: 05/12/2025 17:13:38
