Black Skimmers by Erik Rosengren, FPSA, MPSA

August 2026 - Black Skimmers

About the Image(s)

How I did it??”PSA friends and I were at a beach in St Pete, surrounded by 200+ Skimmers and their young. A beautiful morning that supplied our group with many feeding opportunities. My tools for the day were an OM 1 Mark 11 body coupled with an OM f 4.5 150 to 400 mm lens, hand-held, sitting on my stool. Since the birds were close, I placed the camera close to the ground to make an eye-to-eye image and I was fortunate not to clip the landing adults’ wings. This Nature story was my favorite of the day. My settings were 400 ISO, f 7.1 @ 1250th of a second.

Erik, we have been there together sometime ago. Perfect timing with the adult bringing food to the youngsters. The colony is large, and it is constantly under siege of the seagulls which in many cases steal the eggs and even the chicks for cannibalism. Perfect non distracting background.   Posted: 08/04/2026 15:12:25

Another great shot from the master! Only someone is experienced as you, Erik would know the value of not clipping the wings, and then doing what you needed to do. As I said, a great background. Also a great story. Can't wait to go out and shoot with you again. Always looking forward to it.   Posted: 08/04/2026 21:33:18

Erik, this picture really tells a story, with the adult bring food to the chicks. Great capture to get the adult just about to land. You are always quick with the shutter to capture the decisive moment.   Posted: 08/08/2026 16:34:22
