Sunday the 28th June saw the annual Lymm historic transport day as always a fabulous day filled with all forms of historic transport these are 2 of about 15 steam traction engines that attended on the day around 50 narrow boats on the canal that runs through the middle of the village around 8 were steam barges the earliest from 1915,and a cavalcade of motor cycles, cars and wagons from all decades, all the wheeled vehicles parade through the village at 1030am it took nearly an hour for everything to pass before they park up on the May field on the edge of the village for everyone to have a close look at.
The traction engine the front was built by W.Foster of Lincolnshire and was used for agricultural purposes, is a small scale replica
I have posted an image of 2 of the steam engines building up a head of steam on group 31.
How I did it
Canon EOS 5D Mk III lens Canon EF24-105mm f/4L IS USM f9,1/160s, ISO 200 focal length 105mm Raw file adjusted in photoshop, cropped all round and opened up the shadows, and brought down the highlights sharpened with a high pass filter and added a 2 stroke border.

Ian, thank you for showing us these antique machines. I have not seen them here in the USA. Your selection of vantage point is great (photographer privilege ??) since they are approaching the camera straight on. Good DOF and nice leading line created by the lateral lines on the road.   Posted: 07/02/2026 15:38:47

You have all the elements of a good composition. The curve in the road leads you into the scene and the smaller second vehicle adds balance. You were fortunate to have soft lighting and no harsh lighting. I might have cropped out the flags at the.   Posted: 07/09/2026 17:18:15

Ian, adding to what Bill and Isaac have said, I think you captured the steam engine at exactly the right point in the viewfinder to make it clearly the subject of the image. Any further back and the crowd may have distracted from it. Any closer and you might've lost the whole concept of the scene with the interest of the crowd. Good composition. Good color. This would make a very good photo travel competition entry.   Posted: 07/11/2026 13:39:07

Hi Ian, the curved road presents a viable leading line. Soft color, well balanced and sharp. My only suggestion would be to remove the partially visible arm in the left center edge.   Posted: 07/14/2026 00:41:40
