Sand Art Cannon Beach by Erik Rosengren, FPSA, PPSA

December 2025 - Sand Art Cannon Beach

About the Image(s)

How I did it??”Before attending the Portland conference Bill, Isaac, Marion, Betty Sue and I completed a 5 ½ day trip, starting at Cannon Beach, driving South through many outstanding photographic rich areas, including Sea Stacks, Lighthouses, and beach
Scapes. We continued to shoot, making several stops, while returning to Portland. My tools for the day, OM 1 Mark 11 body, 12 to 40 mm f2.8 lens, polarizer, manual release, and Benro travel tripod. “Sand Art-Cannon Beach” was made using 200 ISO, f 11, 24 mm at 125th of a second. For those of you who haven’t experienced the California and Oregon coast, perhaps it should be added to your Bucket List.

Erik, I think that the colors and brightness of all layers in the image are well done. To my eye the strengths of this image are the sand art, the near-shore rock formations and (somewhat less) the sky. As Sharon says, "This is where the party is." For me the amount of foreground is a distraction from the true subject of the picture. Knowing that you want to maintain the image format I have cropped mostly from the right and bottom but also a bit from the left. I feel that this VF focuses my eye more where it needs to go.   Posted: 12/04/2025 16:56:01

My husband and I have been to parts of the Oregon coast but it was mostly foggy and flat light. I like how the foreground frames the sand. The blue adds some nice color. The sand swirls look silky which adds a different texture. Looks like a fellow photographer on the right side of the beach.   Posted: 12/05/2025 18:22:45

Erik, we were together that morning, and we had a great light with nice reflection of the rocky structures in the water at low tide. The retrieval of the water after high tide create those diagrams in the sand. We met a Scottish photographer (you can see him at the upper right intersection of the rule of thirds, he is with his tripod). I do not mind the amount of foreground since it really frames the sand forming an interesting triangle.   Posted: 12/07/2025 23:16:03

This is a great place for photography. Paula and I visited this area when we attended a previous PSA Conference in Portland OR some years ago. You found a very good vantage point for this view, to illustrate the super patterns in the sand. Very sharp and well composed. Would I crop? I think it is personal preference.   Posted: 12/16/2025 16:51:20
