About the Image(s)

Two weeks ago I received permission to photograph what is probably the most "cathedral-like" protestant church in Rochester. I did the usual pictures of the sanctuary but was looking for something different. The vestibule has these lovely stained glasses. What I pictured in my mind was getting these while still seeing the altar and the stained glass rose window above the altar. The lighting in the two areas was vastly different.

I used my Canon R5 on the tripod and my 24 mm Tilt/Shift lens shift feature. In the vestibule I shot three positions left to right with a 7-shot exposure series. I used ISO 2000 and exposures from 1.0 to 4.0 seconds. Each image was then converted in LR Classic into an HDR. I then shot a 7-exposure series with the doors opened. I of course had to refocus about 1/3 of the way down the sanctuary and exposed from 0.1 seconds to 5 seconds. Again I created an HDR.

These had to be hand-stitched because the "auto" version removed the tops of the open doors.

I then finished with adjustments in LR Classic, Topaz AI and DxO Color Efex.

Nice piece of work, Gary. This is a good architectural record of this splendid church. Sharp and good verticals. The stained glass is well recorded - this can be quite difficult as I have found out in our own church. The two stained glass windows at each end do look a little too bright at their tops. Could you have toned them down to match the rest?   Posted: 07/05/2025 15:15:55

Hi Gary
Your hard work in both taking the images and in pp have paid massive dividends in my opinion,to actually visualise this image and make it turn out so beautifully are to be commended.
It for me is as good as it gets you should be very proud of this beautiful image.

Gary, interesting combination of lines and curves framing the color glass. It is evident the work you put into obtaining a very symmetric image. Good PP bringing out all the color and details.   Posted: 07/15/2025 16:18:12

Hi Gary, you enjoy working an image and it shows. That said, I agree with Guy, there are a couple of avenues in Post that should help. Using the Quick Selection Tool to dampening the bright window areas or Burn Tool to darken same.By in large, good color and sharp.   Posted: 07/21/2025 14:02:47

The warm white balance enhance the colors of the wood and floor. The center corridor has a change of color making the leading line prominent (in a good way). Everything is straight and sharp. Getting the post processing correct with stain glass is hard but you most definitely succeeded. A lot of worth while work.

Nice work Gary. Your process is outstanding. I cannot find fault. There is a photographer in Detroit who does some incredible work using a canon tilt shift lenses adapted to a Leica. https://www.ziewersphotography.com/
