Dancing Through The Museum by Ian Chantler

March 2025 - Dancing Through The Museum

About the Image(s)

My position as a member of the Luma Creations Media team saw me at the World renowned Liverpool World Museum for the event to celebrate the announcement that between them the Luma and the Museum had managed to secure on display a very rare document the Cuerpos Del Tiempo (Bodies of time) a rare pre Hispanic document 1 of only 15 still in existence in the world,so after all the lectures which were so educational Grupo Luma played whilst the Luma Dance team danced through the Museums Ethnology Department something I never thought I would see in this much loved Museum.
A massive thank you to Meghan Backhouse Chair of the Ethnology curators for her help and briefing on do's and don'ts on photography within the Museum.
I am back at the Museum on March 15th as I have been asked to photograph a Mexican traditional Fashion show. Think you might be seeing one of those images next month.

How I did it

Canon EOS 5D Mk III lens Canon EF24-105mm f/4L IS USM focal length 32mm, f5.6 1/200s ISO 640 .Canon flash attached to camera.
Basic adjustments to RAW file made in CS6,cropped slightly all round sharpened using a high pass filter.

How lucky to be near this museum. I hope the community appreciates it and patronizes it. You have captured a good moment when their skirts are twirling and a good angle. The photo is sharp and colorful. You can see their faces and there is no cut off faces. They and the audience look like they are having a good time. I look forward to the submission for next month.   Posted: 03/05/2025 13:05:14

Ian, I always enjoy your pictures of the actors, re-enactors, dancers and others. To my eye the dancers and their colorful outfits should be the fixation point. I felt that , for me, the people in the background were a distraction from that. I used my iPhone with the latest iOS version, the edit feature eraser that is now available (and my pointer finger) to take the observers out of the image. It's not perfect but, for me, I can concentrate on the dancers a bit better.   Posted: 03/08/2025 12:13:46

Hi Gary so many thanks for your kind words it was such a fun event I have to leave the audience in as Luma are partly funded by the arts council they have to ask attendees to their events to fill in a short questionaire about how good was the event etc and some of my pictures of the event are also forwarded to the arts council so I do have show audience attendance and reaction afraid its part of the remit.   Posted: 03/19/2025 20:24:15

Ian, another great shot of dancers, and well done to catch the action at its best. I wondered if you could darken the background and blur it slightly to make the people less obvious.   Posted: 03/11/2025 06:06:06

Ian, shot at peak of action. Sharp. Interesting as how the shoes are not part of the cultural outfit. All different. About the observers in the background implies it is something happening in real time. Either option:darkening or blurring is something to consider.   Posted: 03/11/2025 06:32:18

Hi Isaac
Great spot on the shoes the sort of observation a top photographer would make. I have to leave the audience in as Luma are partly funded by the arts council they have to ask attendees to their events to fill in a short questionaire about how good was the event etc and some of my pictures of the event are also forwarded to the arts council so I do have show audience attendance and reaction afraid its part of the remit.   Posted: 03/19/2025 20:26:58

Another winner Ian, as usual the image is sharp, the color red provides Impact and the dancers are well positioned. Both Gary and Guys suggestions strengthen your photo.   Posted: 03/12/2025 17:18:51
