March 2025 - Scent of A Woman

About the Image(s)

Scent of a woman was created many years ago at the Miami Zoo while on a Camera Club outing. While visiting the lion’s area, this couple were engaged in some foreplay and the lioness was licking the king’s face which I will share with you in another submission. The peak of action I see is when the King closes his eyes while enjoying the moment.
As my fellow friend in this group say: The Tools of the Day used a Nikon D4 with the Nikkor zoom lens 80-400 mm f/4.5-5.6 @ 400 mm and these settings: ISO 1250, f/5.6 and 1/800 of a second. The image was PP in LightRoom and Photoshop since it was backlith and to homogenize the background, but it is a complicated step to select all the couples hair to darken the background.

A lovely romantic photo. The eyes of the female are bright and sharp, both animals are sharp, well exposed and the colors are spot on. The fur under her chin and neck look a little bluish to me, but may be my screen. I never tire of the big cats.   Posted: 03/05/2025 12:28:48

Vella, yes the bluish is consequence of the selection done trying to darken the background. Not an easy task even with the new masking brushes in Adobe (LightRoom and CC)   Posted: 03/06/2025 12:59:05

Isaac, per your conversation with Vella above, Matt Kloskowski has in the past two months put out some short videos on background masking in LR and how avoid it selecting the things like the strands of fur on the neck and mane of the cats. You could probably find them on YouTube.   Posted: 03/08/2025 12:20:56

Hi Isaac
All good images tell a story and boy this tells a story love the way you have zoomed in to capture the scene you are taken straight to the part that tells the story no distractions the blurred background adding to the impact, wonderful texture and sharpness in both animals, its a winner all day long in my book.   Posted: 03/09/2025 14:59:42

Great timing. I love the social interaction between the female and male Lions. The image has great sharpness and clarity. It's unfortunate that the little patch on water appears between the two Lions. I slight amount of edge darkening vignette would help.   Posted: 03/10/2025 14:07:07

Isaac, this is a super shot of the reaction of the male to the presence of the female. However, she seems to have found something else more interesting to look at. I think he has got to do a bit of sweet talking to regain her attention! I agree that selecting fine fur is very difficult and I think you have done a nice job. Great shot.   Posted: 03/11/2025 05:29:26

This is the way all of God's creatures should spend their lives, love not hate. You have told a happy love story Isaac. The image is sharp, has proper color, strong leading line and loving expressions.   Posted: 03/11/2025 16:14:46
