February 2025 - Leading Lines

About the Image(s)

Going over my photos archive looking for images with “oblique Lines” which is the assigned topic for my Camera Club February competition, I found this one created in Tokyo a few years ago, and near the famous Shibuya Crossing. This area of Tokyo resembles Time Square in New York. I think it is appropriate, as well as for strong “Leading Lines”
Used a Nikon D5 with The Nikkor lens 20 mm f/1.8 and thse settings: ISO 5000, f/8 and 1/60th sec. The image was PP in LightRoom, some Denoise was applied and slightly cropped and corrected for wide angle distortion.

Good Morning Isaac. For me the leading lines on this image really help the viewer's eye to be drawn in and held. I (Mr. Symmetry) also like the shorter lines on the right as they tend to make my eye move left to right and follow the traffic. To my eye the bright lights in the background draw me in further and present a "cornucopia of color" for the eye to feast on. Nice shot.

Let's try to shoot Wakodahatchee sometime this winter. Let me know what your schedule looks like.   Posted: 02/07/2025 13:58:35

Hi Isaac, your image captured enough strong leading lines to fill a football field. The 5 white road stripes lead the viewer's eye to the car. The supporting groups of people, color and lights provide a well-thought-out Photo Travel entry.   Posted: 02/07/2025 21:00:56

A very strong image, Isaac, with the leading lines taking the viewer straight into the picture. The colourful buildings and waiting crowd in the background complete the picture. It is also an image which asks a question - why are the lines at the RHS shorter than the others, leaving a blank area of road? Great idea for a strong image. It should do well in your competition.   Posted: 02/08/2025 10:47:27

Hi Guy I could be totally wrong on this it would not be the first time, having seen quite a few pictures of this manic junction I think there is a massive area of stripes across the middle and slimmer ones leading towards it and organised chaos ensues in the middle.   Posted: 02/10/2025 21:55:24

Thanks Ian. I can imagine the chaos!   Posted: 02/11/2025 10:17:20

Hi Isaac for me you have more than fulfilled your brief for the competition, you are not led towards the subjects but absolutely dragged towards them, love the contrast between the pure black and white foreground and the colour explosion it leads you towards but they sit so well together, this deserves to do so well for you.   Posted: 02/10/2025 21:52:18

How astute of you to take this from the angle you chose. My husband and were there and I remember the hordes of people. I like that you were able to capture starburst on the lights on the right. Like the somewhat simple black and white feel which leads to a bright colorful lively scene. The shorter lines for me makes the image feel unbalanced.   Posted: 02/15/2025 18:45:43

I like the concept, however I believe that the diagonal lines are overpowering the overall scene. I would raise the bottom of the frame to include the partial lines on the right side.   Posted: 02/18/2025 16:27:32
