January 2025 - Seaside Shapes

About the Image(s)

Another from the archives this was taken on our holiday in North Yorkshire in April 2024 the weather all week was wet and very windy as Guy will echo because that was when we met up with Guy and Paula for a coffee on a very very wet morning.
This image was created on the final day of the holiday on the promenade at Filey there was a 40mph wind blowing with ocasasional sharp showers I set the tripod up in a shelter close to the steps leading down to the beach as the tide was coming in,the shapes made by the steps and the sea wall appealed to me.
The image looks a little flat and washed out but that is exactly as the conditions were when I was there and so wanted to keep the mood.

How I did it

Canon EOS 5D Mk III lens Canon EF24-105mm f/4L IS USM focal length 67mm, f13 15s ISO 100 I had a Lee six stop filter attached to the lens .
Basic adjustments to RAW file made in CS6 sharpened using a high pass filter highlights dropped shadows opened slightly, some localised dodging and burning and cropped down from the top, and 2px border added..

Ian, for my eye you have successfully broken all of the rules of photography with this one. You and I have always been taught that dis-symmetry left to right does not work well in an image. But for me I find this captivating. My eye starts at the steps and the wall on the right, moves up to the "peak" at the top and then down the curve to the water flowing in. I can envision two of these framed and on the wall. One being the horizontal reverse of the other with the left side of your current being in the center. I believe I could stare at it for hours! Thanks for sharing. Happy New Year! PS Have scheduled a "holiday" this September in Scotland and Ireland. A trip I have always wanted to make.   Posted: 01/11/2025 14:28:09

Ian and Gary, rules are written to be followed, but also to ignore them. Every image we create is on the eyes of the beholder regardless. You have created an image that keeps our eyes and attention activated. I like the effect created by the mist. Lots of geometric areas.   Posted: 01/11/2025 15:43:11

An interesting composition of lines and textures Ian. Your settings appear to be perfect, even bringing out structure in the darker areas, well done.   Posted: 01/11/2025 18:19:37

Interesting use of shapes in the stonework, Ian. The angular shapes of the foreground steps & vertical wall contrast well with the gentle curve of the background wall. For me, however, the image is made by the use of the 15 sec exposure time which has given an ethereal quality to the movement of the water.   Posted: 01/20/2025 10:37:39
