Weissenkirchen on Danube by Guy Davies, EPSA

November 2024 - Weissenkirchen on Danube

About the Image(s)

How I Did It:
This is the small town of Weissenkirchen in Austria, in the Wachau Valley of the River Danube. We were on a river cruise from Budapest to Amsterdam. I think Weissenkirchen means White Churches. I was on deck watching the scenery pass slowly by, and thought the town looked quite picturesque under the heavy clouds. It was a case of framing quickly, focussing and pressing the shutter button before it all changed. Although everything moves slowly by, it is surprising how quickly the picture changes. Now back home, I am working through the many images I shot, and this is the first one I looked at. In ON1 I made very few basic adjustments, and then locally darkened the clouds and lightened the shadows on the background trees. I also darkened the bottom left corner and added the Sunshine Filter overall which just seems to lift the tones nicely. I then just lightened the church a little to help it stand out. I was using my new Lumix FZ1000 camera with the built in Leica zoom lens. Exposure was 1/3200 at f/7.1 and ISO 800 with a focal length of 10 mm (equiv to 27 mm full frame). I used the high shutter speed to minimise the effects of movement which is why I was using ISO 800. The original file was a bit noisy but ON1 now has a very good noise reduction filter which took care of that.

A well-balanced image Guy, showing good depth of field, soft color, light and a strong Rule of Thirds. To your credit, my photo eye tells me that I am l am viewing an image right out of the camera offering no PP. Thanks for mentioning me in the June issue of the Journal concerning our Study Group. Best to you and Paula.   Posted: 11/05/2024 16:54:19

Guy, this is a very appealing image to me. I have always liked the variety of colors seen in local villages in Europe that is all too often missing in the U.S. To my eye the image appeals even more as a panorama. To that end I cropped down from the top and boosted the contrast of the mid and fore grounds. This is what I got.

P.S. Your translation is correct (I took German in High School - Ich habe im Gymnasium Deutsch gelearnt). Perhaps some day I'll do a river cruise (but next year is Scotland and Ireland.)   Posted: 11/06/2024 15:47:09

I like your crop, Gary. Thanks for the suggestion. I guess I was carried away by the look of the clouds.
Thanks for the confirmation of the translation.   Posted: 11/06/2024 16:51:28

Hi Guy
This sounds like a wonderful trip, and by all the images you captured you have created memories,as always beautifully composed I love the way the village is lit contrasting so well with the moody sky and your fast shutter speed has done the job you wanted it to do.
I was also thinking of suggesting a letter box type crop but Gary has beaten me to it.   Posted: 11/11/2024 21:16:01

Guy, River cruises give a lot of photographic opportunities along the way, to capture images like this. Once we did the route from Bucarest to Budapest stoping in many places along the route. I like Gary's crop since the dark clouds were overpowering the scene.   Posted: 11/14/2024 15:28:48

I agree about Gary's crop, Isaac. I guess I got too excited by the heavy clouds!   Posted: 11/14/2024 15:51:57

A beautiful image. I like the soft muted colors. I am also attracted to clouds. The crop really showcases the clouds even more. It must have been a fun cruise.   Posted: 11/20/2024 06:01:38
