About the Image(s)
Flour dance portrait photography is a distinctive genre of dance portraiture. I recently explored this creative technique, using flour as a visual medium to work with a dancer’s physical movements. Against a dark backdrop, I capture fleeting white mist-like trails as flour billows, swirling around and lifting off the dancer’s body with every limb movement. The resulting images blend raw dynamism with ethereal dreaminess.
Camera Settings
Camera & Lens: Nikon Z9, NIKKOR Z 24-70mm f/2.8 S @ 58mm
Shutter Speed: 1/100s. This setting freezes splashing flour and leaping gestures to record sharp grain details. I opted not to use a faster shutter speed so I could preserve the dancer’s sense of motion.
Aperture: f/4.5, ISO: 250.
I used High-speed continuous shooting mode was used to capture the peak moment when airborne flour perfectly synchronises with the dance pose.
Safety Notes
High concentrations of flour dust pose a risk of dust explosion. Open flames are strictly prohibited in the studio. Ensure adequate air circulation and avoid dispersing large volumes of flour in confined spaces.
Take precautions to protect your photography gear. Dust penetrating the lens or camera sensor can lead to costly damage.

I like the colour palette of red, white and black. I like the movement created by the swirl of the dancer's long red dress, and then the "explosive" feeling created by the shower of white flour.
All this action and movement surrounds the "tack sharp" figure of the dancer in the middle, who is in perfect focus.
Well done, Stanley. This is a great photo.
Please keep them coming!
