About the Image(s)

This is the original, corrugated iron clad workshop and shop of Arthur Pudney, a well-known builder around the Port Adelaide area in South Australia. The shed was constructed around 1900 and was used as a carpentry business up until about the mid 1950s. It has been given a Local heritage Listing.

Somewhere in the deep recesses of my mind I have a love for the simplicity of the American realism painter, Edward Hopper. With this in mind, I took a number of photos of Pudney's workshop with the intention of simplifying it in Photoshop. I removed the tree at the front (I copied the left hand side of the window and wall, reversed it and pasted it over the tree area), replaced the front door with the door from the next frame I took, and extended the height and width of the fence. Extended the sky downwards and numerous other changes until I was left with the simple shopfront and electrical wires.

It was a lot of work and I ended up with fourteen layers in Photoshop before I was finished.
