About the Image(s)
As a winter resident of Ft Myers, in Southwest Florida, I have access to a multitude of water-related subjects. Among those, Fort Myers Beach is home to a fleet of Shrimping boats. At certain times of the year, the sun will rise in such an orientation that makes this type of photograph possible. I like being able to take advantage of that.
This months image is a 3-image HDR (one image at "normal" exposure, the next at -1 stop and the 3rd image at +1 stop. Lightroom is very good a blending these into a single image that helps bring up the dark tones and shadows while subduing the bright spots and highlights). This is one of those. As you can tell from the original I've presented (the midtone image), it has blown-out highlights and very dark shadows.
My post processing (after combining the three into an HDR) masked the sky, then subtracted the object (ie., the boat masts and rigging) the get a pretty comprehensive sky. I brightened that a bit, then reversed the mask to bring up additional detail in the boats. Then, the white hulls were each masked with a brush and brightened to be able to see the ships names more clearly.
It was a fun project. I hope you like it.
