About the Image(s)

This is the portion of the New River that goes through West Virginia. It takes a lot of convincing to get my husband out with me on a trip for a sunrise pic. We arrived at dark at a lookout point, and quickly the river filled with fog as the sun began to rise. It was also very cloudy, and I had a difficult time getting a shot when the sun peaked out for a few minutes. (It would have been better as a video to see the everchanging fog rolling through.) The only editing I did was change some of the contrast in the different levels, which I did with Lightroom masking. It was shot with Nikon D610, 28-300mm lens at 28mm, manual mode, f/16, 1/60 sec, ISO 100, triipod. Should I have used a higher ISO? Any other suggestions of what I could do in editing?

Impactful image on immediate impression - it was definitely worth the early expedition! The image draws the eye to the sun with diagonal lines along the mountains and mist. On looking at it a bit longer I felt curious about what is on the mountains - there are small lights possibly suggesting someone is waking up early or having breakfast at a camp-fire. Did you try some de-shadowing? But only slightly I think.   Posted: 02/04/2025 16:50:08

Shirley, I admire the fortitude of you and your husband for going out before dawn to take a photo of a sunrise.
The result is a lovely landscape. The horizon sits comfortably about one third of the way down from the top of the image. The sun is not blown out and it beautifully lights up the clouds above and flows down over the fluffy tops of the fog below. This all contrasts with the solid, dark landscape of the cool hills.
I particularly like how the sunlight filters through the leaves of the foreground bushes.
A great image!
Getting up early was worth it.

Shirley , Compositionally, you used a diagonal composition to make the new river form an introductory line that draws the viewer's eye from the river to the sun, which is a success. The clouds floating on the new river are spectacular and beautiful.

I'd like to give you a suggestion, cut out the top part of the image where there are no clouds, so that the picture is more focused, the overall tone is more uniform, and in addition, use Photoshop or Lightroom to adjust the dark parts of the photo to make the dark parts of the photo more layered.

This is just my personal opinion and is for reference. If I'm not right, please forgive me

Thanks, Stanley. I don's know why I didn't think about cropping some of that unnecessary sky. Makes it pop more.   Posted: 02/18/2025 21:07:40

Wow, Shirley, you captured an awesome sunrise! I love how the fog pulls my eye diagonally across the image. I agree with Stanley's suggestion regarding cropping some of the top. Lovely imageā€¦a great wall hanger!   Posted: 02/07/2025 14:02:24

Great diagonals, Shirley. Many different lines lead to the Sun. Congrats on getting your husband up early. It was worth it.
I, too, like Stanleys interpretation of your image with less sky and more color in the foggy clouds over the river and a lightening of the dark hills.
This is a keeper.   Posted: 02/18/2025 02:49:08
