After a day of touring Malta in 2023 we returned to our hotel in St. Julian's Bay. We walked a short distance down to the harbour in search of a restaurant for dinner when we came across an outdoor boxing class on the water's edge.
The fellow in charge was a mean looking character, but I plucked up enough courage to ask him if I could take some photos of the group. He agreed and this is one of the images of him.
The light from the setting sun was ideal and I spent about half an hour photographing the group as they went about training.
Post processing: I darkened the background and sky.
Camera: Canon 5DM4, 1/500 sec, f/5.6, ISO 250
Lens: Canon EF24-105mm f/4L IS USM

Wow--what a specimen--both your catch and the man! This is one that you can keep staring at as it draws you in. Perfect color and texture of his skin, nice contrast with the blue gloves, great bokeh to the background. To me it is perfect. Don't lose him!   Posted: 02/01/2025 23:14:25

Great capture, and from your description, during the golden hour. Perfect settings and timing to make him look ready for the next punch - perhaps giving us the message to live "the counter punch" with full potential!   Posted: 02/04/2025 16:58:01

I'll bet his punch is a mean as he looks! What a great image. The lighting is perfect and I like that you chose to have him fill the frame. Perfection in street photography!   Posted: 02/07/2025 14:29:44

Martin, Great use of the large aperture to separate this menacing figure from the background. I use that same lens as my go-to lens. I love its versatility; in this case, to fill the frame with your character.
Nice and sharp, well exposed. The image tells a story.   Posted: 02/18/2025 03:17:04
