About the Image(s)

We have a new Contemporary Arts Museum with an attractive design worth exploring. I found my way to the top floor where there is a dance studio and the chairs were lined up against a mirrored wall. Using a wide-angle lens at 24 mm my settings were f/16, 1/30th sec, ISO 3200. Seconds later the dance instructor came in to move the chairs, so I persuaded her to pose. The shot serves to show the extent of the room and reflections (original 2) making it quite difficult to avoid intrusion by the photographer (me) in the background and her hair reflection overlapping with her portrait which I decided to abandon. In post, I cropped, denoised and flipped the original horizontally to improve diagonals and converted to monochrome. I increased the whites and was aggressive in pushing the blacks to bring out both the gradient of gray on the floor and the black in the chair legs so as to show a tonal range from black to white.

I am very taken back by this image. Everything about it has me studying how you accomplished this from the original. If it weren't for the line of mirror to the floor, I would have thought it was two rows of chairs back to back. I especially like how the gradient of the grays fade out and the window casing looks like shelves. I think this deserves to be hung in the museum.   Posted: 12/01/2024 20:01:41

I omitted information on removing the black stand. I use a combination of generative fill with cloning. Thanks for you kind comments - mostly luck I think.   Posted: 12/05/2024 23:56:05

Piers, you have created an engaging image that showcases repetition and form. The black and white treatment helps to emphasize the pattern and the intricate wire design of the chairs, giving the image a strong graphic quality.
Your choice to convert to monochrome is effective as it strips away any distraction that colour might introduce, allowing the viewer to focus on the play of light and shadow as well as the geometric shapes. Also, your decision to capture the chairs at an angle, provides a sense of depth and perspective.
A great image. Well done!

Piers, You are a man after my own photographic-vision heart. I would have taken this image if I came across it.
I love this image as presented. I can appreciate it even more once reading the story behind the capture and editing. I love the Monochrome treatment. I can tell you had fun playing with this editing.
Very well done!!   Posted: 12/09/2024 20:56:47

I find this image captivating and your choice to change it to monochrome was superb! I agree with Martin in that this image is all about shapes, lines and patterns. Well done!   Posted: 12/16/2024 23:26:23
