About the Image(s)

This Blue Heron decided to make its home in the water at the Little Rock, AR, zoo.
It was shot with Nikon D610, 28-300mm lens at 122mm, aperture priority, f/5.6,
1/12 sec, ISO 100, handheld. The shot was overexposed and numerous adjustments
were made in Lightroom??”exposure, contrast, shadow, highlights, clarity, dehaze,
sharpen, crop. Everyone is always getting these great shots of herons, but I never
have enough reach with my lenses, or I scare them off if I have a shorter lens.
Although this one was in the zoo, he was there by choice!

Very nice heron portrait with great feather detail and color. and centered in an environmental and story-telling spot. Your treatment in post is excellent. The only point I can find to make is that you have emphasized the reflection on a central spot of water and in contrast the remaining water has almost gone from view. I think the image would improve by bringing back some of the remaining reflection on both sides.   Posted: 12/06/2024 00:14:18

I agree with Piers' comments, and maybe include a little more of the reflected water.
This is a striking image of a heron in a natural setting, and you've done a commendable job capturing it in its environment. The sharp focus on the bird's eye and the fine details in its feathers help make this a striking image. The stillness of the water provides a nice reflection, adding depth to the shot. You have done well to realistically separate the subject from the background. Well done

Shirley.
Wonderful image. Great touch with the editing sliders to bring out the details in the colors and the feathers.
I agree with others that a bit less crop from the bottom would improve the breadth of the reflection - a critical portion of the composition. I would like to see the reflection include all of the rock to the left the Heron to help add to the story of the setting.
Very nice.   Posted: 12/09/2024 21:06:40

Great image, Shirley! You captured the detail in his feathers and managed to get the eye sharp. To me, it doesn't look as though you cropped too much off the bottom but perhaps made it a bit too dark and lost some of the detail in the reflections. Just my observation.   Posted: 12/16/2024 23:18:35
