About the Image(s)

This summer I had the opportunity to photograph a local powwow. It had a lot of participants from across Canada and the United States. The person in this image was just about to enter the arena and I could sense his focused concentration. I liked that the flag was part of the picture. I'm sending this one to a national competition so we'll see how it fares."

Hi Tor, I really like this image and the intent concentration on this man's face. However, I would not have cropped it so tightly. A bit more space on top and I would have left the feathers in the back. On the bottom, I would have left the entire buffalo's head. Great story with Native American and the US flag.   Posted: 11/03/2024 21:20:12

Great image with story and suspense. The transition from the original is close to perfect, your challenges being to cone down from the excess information typical of pictures with elaborately decorated regalia. Given the situation I think your crop is about right and gives space for him to look forwards. Including more feathers at the back would present a problem with spacing and some blown-out feathers. I would lower exposure on the forehead very slightly - but not sure why.   Posted: 11/04/2024 21:09:50

Tor.
Very interesting capture showing intense concentration.
My preference is the colored version. The colors are as intense as his stare. Like others have referenced, I too, like the feathers on his back. It tells more of a story.
I would, however, tone down the highlights at the base of the feathers.
Very interesting image.

You have a real human interest story here. My first thought was that the original photo has some wonderful colors that would be so typical of the Indian culture. But you didn't ask us to give opinions on which we prefer. You must have had a reason to make it monochrome. To show his culture, I would crop just below the skull on his shirt and to the left of his feathers and leave just a little more above his head. You have many options here and hope you do well on the competition.   Posted: 11/05/2024 00:46:45

Tor, this is a striking black and white photograph of the subject in traditional regalia. You have captured them in profile, wearing an impressive feathered headdress with black and white feathers.
The composition is powerful, with the subject photographed against a light background which creates a strong contrast and emphasizes the details of their clothes and facial features. This image captures a sense of dignity, tradition, and cultural pride, which by your image title, "Honour and Pride," you have succeeded in doing. Well done.
