Humpback Breach by Joey Johnson

November 2024 - Humpback Breach

About the Image(s)

While visiting the Great Bear Rainforest, our boat motored through an area called Whale Channel. While there, this humpback appeared to be sleeping out away from us and then it looked like it had dived down. All of a sudden it breached right by the boat, three times. Sony a1, Tamron 70-180 2.8 lens, f14, 1/500, iso 800. Some cropping and minor adjustments in Lightroom.

How lucky you are! It is a very nice capture having all clear details and even water drops from its nostrils and fins. Thanks for sharing.   Posted: 11/07/2024 05:13:26

Great image and it's all it could be. It's almost monochromatic.   Posted: 11/09/2024 12:31:58

This is a great shot. I plan to visit Great Bear Rainforest next year and hope I will do as well as you did.   Posted: 11/09/2024 14:46:48

This one was a big surprise, but it is hard to visit there and not come away with amazing images. Have fun.   Posted: 11/09/2024 18:27:39

Great capture. Activity tells the story. Nice exposed and sharp.   Posted: 11/15/2024 22:36:59

Picture perfect and you were ready to shoot. Excellent capture for 1/500. I'm thinking you caught the whale at the right moment. At its peak, stops, then descending. I have missed quite a few at 1/800. I went to a seminar last week and the presenter recommended 1/2500 for wildlife. Kind of a guaranteed setting if it works with the rest of your settings. This whale breached 3 times in front of us, so got that rare second chance. It was amazing.   Posted: 11/20/2024 00:01:40
