Rainy Day on the Nest by Joey Johnson

October 2024 - Rainy Day on the Nest

About the Image(s)

While floating around in an inlet in the Great Bear Rainforest in BC, in the rain, this eagle was staunchly handling nest duty in spite of the inclement weather. Personally, I was ready to get back on the boat and out of the cold rain. Sony a1, Sony 100-400 lens, 1/1250, f 5.6, iso 1000. Handheld in a Zodiak.

Nice interesting image. Well exposed, sharp eyes. It might also work well as a horizontal image by subtracting some from the top and bottom of the image.   Posted: 10/06/2024 21:43:25

The rain you captured with your film speed is one of a kind for a cool effect. I like the disgruntled looking damp eagle too.   Posted: 10/08/2024 22:14:49

I hadn't anticipated capturing the rain. It kind of makes the image.   Posted: 10/08/2024 22:42:49

The rain in the picture makes it along with the eagle's expression "I shall endure". Well done!   Posted: 10/11/2024 19:31:56

The bird is beautiful. Well placed in frame, good detail in feathers, rain works well with title. I played with Neal's horizontal idea and it worked well for me.   Posted: 10/13/2024 19:58:57

I really like how the eagle contrast with the darker vegetation around it. The branches frame the eagle nicely. I might try a square format with the cropping without removing too much of the branch in the upper left. A slight vignette might also help keep the eye on the eagle. You do some selecting burning on, especially, the top branch. I don't know what was happening Zodiac but a little slower shutter speed could have helped to make the rain look less like Neal's stars. :)

I could feel how chilly it was in the rain for both you and the eagle. She seems to be worried about her eggs. Your capture is well done as nature photography.
