About the Image(s)
Interior shot in a barn - populated by looms - natural light from the window beyond - tripod and long-ish exposure
Single, simple element - supported by the cloth hanging in the background
Not sure that I could claim that it has meaning - but I was drawn by the arrangement

Gerard, there is a saying over here and maybe your way too that 'it is what it says on the tin'. Meaning of course in this case 'a mallet is a mallet'. So what we have here is just that but as you say the arrangement is interesting and pleasing. This is an object ready for use or which has been used. The lighting is helpful for bringing out the texture of the wood but I also feel that the highlights on the top of the mallet in particular is a little harsh and could be toned down somewhat. And, at the same time the engraving on the handle could be lightened a little to make it clearer.   Posted: 05/02/2023 11:08:28
or ... "a mallet by any other name would hurt a much" - but that would be Shakespeare down at the dark side of the East End.

Good morning Gerard, I can see why this item caught your eye. I like the lighting and the symbolism of the mallet. I see the pattern in the cloth hanging and the wood in the background. There is lots to look at and there is good textures. I just like the minimalistic look of just the mallet. I do have a visual feedback of what I would do with the image.   Posted: 05/08/2023 07:57:03
Hi Gerard,
Simple, dark, moody, and interesting image. I like the different wooden textures on the background, bench, and mallet. Composed nicely using the lines in the wood and handle of the mallet leading into the frame. I agree with Peter that the light on top of the mallet is a bit too bright. Very nice image.   Posted: 05/08/2023 20:14:59

Gerard -- I love the minimalism of this image and the Rembrandt-style lighting. I also like that it is a mallet; not a hammer or a gavel. Mallet suggests old-fashioned craftsmanship to me. Very nice.   Posted: 05/13/2023 14:25:22
The location was indeed "old-fashioned craftsmen": it is a weaving school that specializes in tracking down and restoring old barn looms.   Posted: 05/14/2023 20:37:34
