About the Image(s)

This image was taken with a Nikon D7000 in an early morning shoot at the west rim of the Grand Canyon, featuring the Colorado River as it winds deep into the Canyon.

It was taken with an 18-200 zoom at around 23mm, ISO 250, f9.5. The composition was meant to focus on the brightness of the River, with the fore-ground cliffs drawing the eye into and around the River bend, toward the highlighted cliffs in the background and the brightening sky. I took the original into LR and cropped it to eliminate extraneous shrubs and rock, and increased the luminance and saturation.

It is a pleasant picture with the early morning light on the mountain tops. The clouds top right add some balance to the cliffs bottom left. The image is dominated by the cliffs and I think there needed to be more light and detail in the canyon and less of the cliffs in order to achieve your objective.   Posted: 06/13/2021 04:32:58

I tried using a friend's Luminar to edit and see if I could increase the lighting within the Canyon without blowing out the cliffs, already bathed in sunrise. I think it looks better on my screen but frankly, am still not sure it's possible to light the river better and still keep the 'just dawn shadows' too.   Posted: 06/13/2021 17:54:04

Thank you - I started to play around with light adjustment and realized that I didn't like where I was going, so I'll try some other ways of getting the dominance of the rising sun on the Canyon walls reduced and the river glow enhanced.   Posted: 06/13/2021 07:10:19

i like the golden top / roof of the mountain ranges. i can imagine it must be breathtaking!

one challenge i myself have is composition when i were to put into similar spot. what to keep and what to crop out, who is the main body, where i want my audience to focus.

i am happy to hear from anyone who have suggestions on what to do. thank you¼   Posted: 06/16/2021 08:54:11
