About the Image(s)

I took this photo this week on September 29th at the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The fall mating season begins each year around mid-September and is known as the rut. And it’s during this time that bulls are energized and ready for action. They make bugle calls to attract the cows, and to challenge other males. This photo was taken in the fields near the Oconaluftee Visitor Center just outside of Cherokee, N.C. I have been going there for the last 3 years and always wanted to photograph the bulls with mist. This was my year . I was able to get some fabulous photos .
Photo taken with Nikon D500 at 7:52 - Sunrise was at 7:24 - because this is in the valley the sun had not risen above the mountain.
1/640 sec, f6/3 120MM
I have always envisioned this photo in B&W, I put it through DeNoise and adjusted a couple sliders.

Hi Sophia, first, sorry about the initial posting. I had the photos switched, but all good now.
Wonderful image. Quite the intimidating gaze. Not a fan when I can't really read an animals face hahaha.
I find B&W conversions to be challenging and I am not experienced enough to offer solid advice when it comes to color sliders to adjust B&W tonality and contrast. I mention it because the foreground appears a bit washed. Adjusting red or orange would kind of be the equivalent of using contrast filters in a darkroom. Might help bring out some texture.   Posted: 10/03/2021 07:58:21

Thank you Steven. I am still playing with the edit and will go back and see how I can get more of the bull to stand out.. Again, thank you for your feedback.   Posted: 10/12/2021 06:17:55

I have seen classes in conversion to BW where each color is treated separately. If you could adjust the green and put it on a separate layer, you could probably get it clearer and more distinctive. The color original is less washed out.

Thank you Jeffrey, I am not that great with Layers but I will follow our direction and get better at it. I appreciate your input.   Posted: 10/12/2021 06:14:50
