Marking Time by Carol Sheppard

September 2021 - Marking Time

About the Image(s)

This is titled "Marking Time" and it is an end-of-season flower...a Dahlia. Once the Dahlia's bloom, for me, it begins to feel like Fall is coming.

I used my Olympus OMD1-3, handheld, with my 60mm macro lens. The light was pretty but right on the edge of becoming too strong. I did very little to this in post--cropped off the right edge, took it into NIK Color Efex and added a vignette. I played with different colors, but like the dream-look. This particular image was more about the bee than the flower. Finally, I sharpened about 20% in LR.

Settings were f4.0, iso 1000, 1/200 sec. (to compensate for the handholding).

Very nice image. I would suggest, since you were using a macro lens and the Bee is the subject, make the Bee the subject. I cropped the image down around the Bee. Ran it through Topaz Denoise Ai and Topaz Sharpen Ai. This is my results.   Posted: 09/11/2021 14:32:41

Yes, I agree: this makes the bee much more the subject. It is always so difficult for me to cut off the flower petals!   Posted: 09/12/2021 10:25:11

Well, I think it was nice originally, althought the right side being a bit blown out does detract. That remains even on Stuart's crop. But it gives a dreamy quality that I like in the original. I'm not keen on the part of the leaf showing below the petal.
The insect (a hoverfly?) is nice and sharp across its depth, remarkable for f4, you nailed the focus at the ideal spot I think.   Posted: 09/18/2021 15:45:51
