Brown Thrasher by Sarita Yeola

June 2021 - Brown Thrasher

About the Image(s)

I noticed this brown thrasher in the shrubs. I was about to walk away when it came out of the shrub and sat in clear view. After a few pictures I noticed that it was sticking its tongue out as if it was coughing. It continued doing this for a while. I had my camera focused on the bird for a long time thinking it would cough up something. But eventually it flew back into hiding. Not sure if this is a common behavior? I cropped the original image, removed a branch that was at the edge of the the frame and used Topaz Denoise to get the final image.

Nikon D500: 500mm, 1/1250s, f/5.6, ISO 3200.

Sarita, the detail is this bird is terrific. Look at that mouth. An animal hospital could use this photo. The only change I might try is lightening up the greens behind his head so his dark head doesn't blend in so much. Maybe increase yellow or green luminosity. This is a wonderful capture.   Posted: 06/06/2021 14:22:10

Fantastic .....sharp, the bird's body ends up as the leading line into that mouth! I just love the expression you've captured and wonder why the coughing. I would have thought it was trying to cough something up as well. Though the only bird I've seen do that are the raptors that cough up pellets. Great image!   Posted: 06/10/2021 11:01:52

Beautiful sharp image with great timing. I like the crop and the detail in the feet grasping the log. The tip of a branch above his/her head and the one in the upper right corner is a little bit distracting.   Posted: 06/21/2021 23:46:50
