Cooper's Hawk by Sherry Icardi

June 2021 - Cooper's Hawk

About the Image(s)

My neighborhood has a pair of Cooper's hawks that reside in one of the trees nearby. As a result we have seen them frequently this year and I've had the opportunity to get some great shots of them! They had a nest and looks like none of the chicks survived this year but they have a very high attrition rate. Hasn't deterred them from the area though and so now Im anxious to see how long they stick around! But I have come to know them pretty well and all their favorite hangouts! I have tried to get them in flight but they like to fly beneath the canopy which is super dark and difficult to follow, with little contrast (my biggest complaint with the PF lens).

Taken May 29th, 2021 with my D500 and 500MM Pf lens on a tripod.

Sherry, that is a beautiful bird. Perhaps they are not threatened by you now hanging around. Editing wise, the only thing I might experiment with is using a brush and decreasing the highlights in the blue area, or decreasing luminosity in the blue tone, and then using a brush, brighting up the bird's head just a bit. He does have a glint in the eye, so there is some degree of light on him.   Posted: 06/06/2021 14:18:29

Sherry, Beautiful Cooper's hawk. I have seen Red tailed and Red shouldered hawks in my area. I have yet to spot a Cooper's hawk. It is amazing that they have found a home in your neighborhood.

I agree with Judy regarding reducing the luminosity in blue tone. It will definitely help keep the focus on the bird. Great image!   Posted: 06/07/2021 15:50:17

Excellent photograph of the Cooper Hawk!
Focus is spot on. I like the blue background behind the Hawk, for me, it makes him/her pop.   Posted: 06/08/2021 13:47:25

Excellent capture of a beautiful Cooper's Hawk. I really enjoy birds the group shares that I typically don't see.
Eye is sharp, good detail in the feathers. Really like the bokeh from the trees. I agree, the blue sky is a bit bright.   Posted: 06/21/2021 23:37:36
