Cardinal with Caterpillar by Sarita Yeola

May 2021 - Cardinal with Caterpillar

About the Image(s)

I was out in my yard with my camera when I saw this cardinal picking leaves off a tree. When I looked through the camera lens the cardinal had actually found a caterpillar. I cropped the original image and used Topaz denoise to cleanup the image.

Nikon D500: 500mm, 1/800s, f/6.3, ISO 720.

Beautiful clarity and texture especially on the front part of the bird! Good timing in catching the bird with a caterpillar!

Was the light coming from the right in this photo? Might just one my monitor, but it looks to me as though the back 2/3 of the Cardinal is darker than the front 1/3. In some ways, this acts as a natural light vignette!

Seeing the ISO at 720, I'm assuming that you used Auto ISO?   Posted: 05/05/2021 16:31:19

Hi Peter, Thank you for your comments. I think this photo was taken in the afternoon, the time stamp on the photo is 1pm, when the sun was high in the sky but the cardinal was in the leaves. You are correct, I used Auto ISO for this image.   Posted: 05/06/2021 14:44:46

I like the reflection in the eye of the Cardinal. I can't make it bigger but was wondering if you taking the photo is part of the reflection. The complementary colors are wonderful here with the red and green that that little green caterpillar. Its a super photo.   Posted: 05/06/2021 12:22:17

Thank you for your comments Judy. More than the cardinal eating the caterpillar, I liked this photo better when I saw the reflection of my house in the cardinals eye.   Posted: 05/06/2021 14:38:25

Beautiful image and brilliant colors on the Cardinal, and I agree with Judy, those complimentary colors really make them pop! I too notice the reflection in the eye, and I suspect since this is your backyard, it may be your house! I have the advantage of receiving the original to post so I can zoom in more! I love the action you have caught of the cardinal and the caterpillar as breakfast.

Topaz DeNoise does a great job on the noise and is probably the easiest plug in I have ever used. I keep playing with it a lot since early morning hours and deep in the trees makes for high ISO needs and I really don't like noise.

Beautiful image!   Posted: 05/06/2021 13:19:01
