About the Image(s)

I took this image early one morning in the New Orleans French Quarter. I like the juxtaposition of the man and the monument. Canon 5D IV, Tamron 28-300 at 110mm, f16, 1/30 second ISO 4000. In Lightroom I cropped and adjusted the exposure before converting o B&W.

To my eye it is underexposed and fuzzy and flat. Suggest increasing the f/stop to about 8, ISO to 8000, which will get that shutter speed higher. I cropped it square to give a little stronger story telling. Added some contrast.   Posted: 11/07/2023 11:26:47

Hi Chuck, thanks for the comments. Good suggestions, I agree about the f stop, not sure why I used f16. I'm not sure I like the square format, I did not want to crop from the left.   Posted: 11/07/2023 16:33:30

Hi Chuck, I thought more about your comments, etc. I like your thoughts on the f stop but I don't like your changes to the image. I think they do not convey the meaning. This image was taken well before dawn, it was dark and a homeless person was sleeping on a bench. I think that my darker and grittier image conveys that feeling.   Posted: 11/09/2023 07:50:46

I am quite familiar with New Orleans having lived there 24 years, but I have never encountered this monument!! Though I have encountered many many homeless people there. I think the subject matter is poignant and interesting. It is gritty, and indeed that style may suit the subject matter. I think it's a really good capture and a good story .   Posted: 11/12/2023 20:47:08

This image tells a story. I am happy with either version. The colour version shows the person's grimy hand and that creates some emotion for the viewer. The light on the monument to the immigrant probably points to a brighter future. Well captured.   Posted: 11/26/2023 05:56:15
