Mountain Roads City Streets by Marianne Barnhardt

January 2022 - Mountain Roads City Streets

About the Image(s)

Driving by this street the whole scene caught my eye. New and Old, mountains and streets, high risers and small stores.People on the street, people on the roof, and people in the windows. The chair caught my eye. It amazes me how much I saw and captured in 58 seconds . I think the coolest part is the STOP at the end of the city.
I only had my Canon. Would love to enter this in a contest but the quality isn't great.

Marianne, looks like San Francisco. As you mention it is not great. Lacks contrast and it is not sharp. Good composition and it is a snapshot of your trip.   Posted: 01/02/2022 11:37:38

Thank you Isaac I find it very difficult to take pictures when I'm moving and I have very limited time .I'm not very good at that especially without a tripod or anything to balance on, but I like what Lou did to it it's amazing I need to really learn that technique.   Posted: 01/02/2022 20:28:50

Hi Marianne, I think you have another very nice image. It seems to me that you have an eye for this sort of image. I think the composition and depth of field are great. I think the image is good and could be contest quality, as Isaac said it lacks contrast. I hope you don't mind that I took the liberty of importing a copy and I did a couple of minor adjustments in Lightroom. I de-hazed the image and added some sharpness. I also darkened the blacks somewhat.   Posted: 01/02/2022 16:19:43

I never mind anything anyone is willing to share with me I still haven't mastered this technique and I'm not sure why I can't seem to get it right you did a great job with it and I really appreciate it. Thank you very much maybe we could touch base sometime and you could walk me through it. On a zoom I guess :-)   Posted: 01/02/2022 20:29:36

Sure that would work. Do you use Lightroom?   Posted: 01/02/2022 20:57:07

In my mind it's an interesting snapshot but not really street photography or wall worthy. The black and white conversion is very flat and sort of soft. I would really like to see the color original.   Posted: 01/04/2022 14:54:18

I understand. There is no story. The original is what I posted.   Posted: 01/15/2022 12:19:45

I like that it's an image in black and white. The street is well placed in the image with the buildings on the side.   Posted: 01/19/2022 09:52:17

I think that street photography is not well understood by many. I myself took sometime to get my head around it. To me to be able to comment on a photograph in a street category must start with whether or not this photo should be entered into this category in the first place. In my opinion this image does not really fall into the street photography category. Having a street in the image does not make it a street photo, and a street in the photo is not a mandatory element of street photography. What is a important part of street photography is humanity. I would suggest that an image that is focused closer to humans or something related to humanity would be a better selection for this category. Please do not take this the wrong way, I am only sharing my opinion of what type of photos should be submitted. Please understand Marianne that I am only trying to help. Unless we discuss this no one will learn anything about this genre.   Posted: 01/22/2022 13:58:32

Here are 2 definitions:
from Britanica: street photography, a genre of photography that records everyday life in a public place. The very publicness of the setting enables the photographer to take candid pictures of strangers, often without their knowledge. Street photographers do not necessarily have a social purpose in mind, but they prefer to isolate and capture moments which might otherwise go unnoticed.
from Wikipedia:Street photography, also sometimes called candid photography, is photography conducted for art or enquiry that features unmediated chance encounters and random incidents within public places. Although there is a difference between street and candid photography, it is usually subtle with most street photography being candid in nature and some candid photography being classifiable as street photography. Street photography does not necessitate the presence of a street or even the urban environment. Though people usually feature directly, street photography might be absent of people and can be of an object or environment where the image projects a decidedly human character in facsimile or aesthetic   Posted: 01/22/2022 14:03:17

Ron, I agree with you 100%. I am usually a very people person Street photographer. I was having trouble with this photo for the same reason I couldn't see any people in it and I didn't have a story. So I appreciate everything you said and March I will probably spend more time posting more Street photography. Thanks again it means a lot.   Posted: 01/22/2022 15:48:11
