Amtrak Hobo by Chuck Carstensen

November 2021 - Amtrak Hobo

About the Image(s)

While making a picture of the abandoned railroad tracks near downtown Montrose, Colorado I saw this person sitting on the side of a building. He was reading a newspaper and paid no attention to me. I had a good conversation with him after shooting this picture. He said he has traveled all over the states by Amtrak and considers himself a hobo because of his lifestyle. He is a traveler with a backpak. He hitchikes if not riding Amtrak. Fujifilm XPro2, 23mm, ISO 1600, F/16 aperture priority. Post processed in Luminar AI.

I like the candid nature of the subject. The subject shows up well with the building in the back. Good story telling value as well.   Posted: 11/13/2021 18:05:05

Very interesting story. I hadn't noticed him at first, but when I did he stood out as a lost soul. Sounds like he is happy with who he is and where his road takes him.   Posted: 11/16/2021 20:55:18

Hi Chuck, a very interesting image. I agree with Marianne that I did not really notice the man at first. I think that the surroundings are needed to tell the story. In my opinion less of the foreground might help focus attention on the man.   Posted: 11/22/2021 10:00:02
