About the Image(s)

My wife and I were in South Dakota last week and made a quick detour to see Mount Rushmore, a place we'd never seen before. Weather was mild and we got some terrific clouds in an otherwise blue sky. I made this image with my Sony A6500 (full spectrum conversion) with a 590 nm filter. I processed it in Lightroom, using a custom profile that does the red-blue swap. I cropped in a bit, gave it a custom white balance, adjusted the sliders this way and that and brought it into Photoshop where I darkened the sky a bit at the top. I used On1 Effects to apply Dynamic Contrast and a subtle vignette.

Sony A6500, Canon 18-135 EF-S f3.5-5.6 lens, 35mm, f/11, 1/250, ISO 125. Shot handheld.

Striking image, Henry. Wish I could have been there. I really like the impact you have achieved.   Posted: 06/10/2021 14:32:48

I like this image. Well done. The only suggestion I could have made (It is so easy for someone else to look and say, "You should have done so and so.") is that of framing in the viewfinder so that the carved figures were a little closer to the right edge. This would also cut out a small portion of the cloudless sky and left room on the left for a larger portion of the more interesting cloudy sky. (Please run right out and reshoot this and repost by tomorrow.) All kidding aside, very nice job.   Posted: 06/11/2021 12:03:39

Thanks, Chan. Fortunately, I made a lot of images with a variety of compositions. On top of that, the clouds were moving pretty quickly so I have a lot of different options. I'll have to go back and take another look.   Posted: 06/11/2021 12:10:17

Henry, you have now missed a great opportunity. You could have quickly posted one of the other photos and convinced my you responded to my suggestion by running back to reshoot. How would I have known for sure?   Posted: 06/11/2021 12:58:59

I like your image. as you can see I did a tighter crop to bring the focus to the presidents and still keep the dynamics of your original in my view   Posted: 06/11/2021 18:14:38
