About the Image(s)

I took this image October 5th in Costa Rica. Technicals: Handheld with Nikon Z9, 105mm Macro lens, Manual Mode, F11, 1/100, ISO 1600 with Center Weighted Average metering and Auto White Balance. No flash was used.

Post Processing: I first straightened the image so the flower stem would be near vertical. Then I cropped the image to what you see. Post-processing also included reducing the exposure and then applying a Camera Raw Adaptive Subject/Warm Pop preset to increase only the subject’s exposure. I think I should have darkened or blurred the upper right corner a bit. Comments/suggestions are appreciated.

I love this one! Very sharp and clear. Intense colors and the purple. and green make each other strong. And those eyes...   Posted: 11/02/2023 18:30:58

Thanks Ginny. You have to take a photo tour in Costa Rica sometime.   Posted: 11/02/2023 20:25:37

Nice capture and perfect composition between the flower and the tree frog. Seems to have a little ghosting on the stem of the flower which could be removed by an overall darkening of the background. Overall excellent.   Posted: 11/08/2023 14:41:40

Hi Jack. What a lucky shot. I have never seen this kind of frog. My first impression, it was a composite image. I think you have done a great editing. My only suggestion is to refine (smooth out) a bit of halos around the flower and its background.   Posted: 11/12/2023 03:01:57

Thanks Dan and Frans. I do see the ghosting and slight halos that resulted from my darkening the background and will take your suggestions on them. Frans this is not a composite image. I was recently in Costa Rica again on a frog shoot. It was the heavy rainy season and when the frogs mate. We found frogs in many unusual places as the males chased the females which my biologist friend said only occurs during this brief time.   Posted: 11/12/2023 06:34:30

Jack, will you share the image with Frans' suggestion?   Posted: 11/12/2023 09:29:13

Lovely pic, but think you did it a deservices with your post though: there is quite a bit of artifacting along the stem and right side of the flower which draws attention to your mask work.

Also I think the original image is stronger sans the straightening as it adds to the story . Instead of the straighten consider cropping in quite tight on the flower and frog and lead a bit of negative space to the right and below them: that would really heighten a sense of the frog's precarious perch for the viewer.   Posted: 11/13/2023 20:15:01

Is this what you had in mind LC?   Posted: 11/14/2023 09:32:11

yes but then remove your straighten too :). the tile will add to the drama.

I can see the impact LC was suggesting you would get following his suggestions. The frog does seem more precarious. It is a very impressive shot!   Posted: 11/15/2023 05:37:02
