This image was taken from a boat at the off-shore of North Jakarta, Indonesia. It was a bird photography hunting event sponsored by Canon Indonesia.
I captured this image using Canon EOS R6 – 1/2500 sec, f/6.3, ISO 6400. Sigma Lens Contemporary 150-600 mm f 5-6.3 @ 500 mm. Back button focus with Animal Eye Detection. Mechanical Shutter. The image was edited in LR and PS. No additional or elements removal.

Frans, welcome to DD90. Love your photo. When you can see the water drops a bird is spreading on take off it adds to the photo for me. I also like that the background is blurred but you still know what the environment is. I also favor photos where the bird fills the frame. Posted: 06/09/2022 07:35:31

Hi Frans, welcome. Really nice image of the heron; particularly enjoy the dynamic angle of the bird in the frame with space to move into. The highlights are well controlled and nice detail in the darks. The top of the bill looks a bit burned out to me. If it were mine, I think I would have lifted the shadows in the background a tad and perhaps slightly desaturated the greens. Either that or darkened the blues in the background to the left to make the bird stand out more. The standard of nature is so high these days to get awards is very demanding.
