Dragonfly by Andrea McLaughlin

December 2021 - Dragonfly

About the Image(s)

This photo was taken a few years ago in my backyard. In late summer, the backyard is filled with hundreds of dragonflies feeding. This guy landed on one of my plants and I quickly snapped a photo. His eye is out of focus, but it was all I could get in the moment. iso20, 28mm, f/1.8.

Great capture. For me the best part is the front wing - beautiful. The background is distracting.   Posted: 12/01/2021 16:29:13

Nice composition, greater DoF might have made the subject pop more   Posted: 12/01/2021 17:00:57

Very artistic image. The colors work well together. I quite like the bokeh but I know it is not to everyone's taste, especially for a Nature image. There is some nice detail on the head showing the ocelli and antennae nicely. I also like the pseudo-pupil [black spot]. If you had increased the DoF you would be obliged to get all the insect in focus and risk making the background more distracting; Tricky!   Posted: 12/05/2021 10:11:40

Like the colors a lot. When I would present insect photos the number one comment would be, have the whole insect in focus. Because most of the time you are so close to the subject you need a small aperture F16 to achieve this. Also try to keep the insect parallel to the lens and you can open up the aperture.   Posted: 12/20/2021 14:10:48
