December 2021 - Trumpeter Swans In Harmony

About the Image(s)

Sony A1, Sony 200-600 @ 518, 1/2000s, ISO 640. I was trying to practice my panning skills with BIF in order to blur the background and that did not work, but was able to capture each bird with a different wing angle. Oh well.

You got them at different stages of the stroke! Did you try cropping in tighter to make the birds larger?   Posted: 12/01/2021 16:33:32

Nice light. Reflections in the water add to the composition. Wing position is not bad since you have 3 birds, each with 1/3 of the wing motion. You could try cropping more of the right side to see if it makes the image a bit more dynamic.   Posted: 12/04/2021 08:12:55

Nice capture. Always good to have more space in the direction of the birds' flight. So, a slight crop on the right would help. Judges always look for space for the birds to fly into! At a shutter speed of 1/2000s almost every movement is frozen so panning or otherwise will make little difference. Try using a shutter speed of 1/50s with a single swan in flight. Hard to do, but the results can be amazing with blurred wings and a frozen [in focus] head and neck. Very much 'in' at the moment.   Posted: 12/05/2021 10:13:44

Dan, if you try any of the suggestions please post them.   Posted: 12/05/2021 10:29:23

Nice photo. A tighter crop on the back side will help.   Posted: 12/20/2021 13:57:55
