Maybug on Calla Lilies by Alan Cork

November 2021 - Maybug on Calla Lilies

About the Image(s)

This is a bit of a twist from the previous month's image. Maybugs remain perfectly still during the day if undisturbed so capturing an image of one sitting on a calla lily was easy enough even with a photostack of 25 images [Nikon D850 on tripod, 100mm lens, f7.1, exp 1/20s, ISO64]. However, the original image had a black background and to my eye a single lily did not really work so I took stacks of several lilies, masked out the backgrounds and combined them to create the finished image.

Very precise and clear. With no background it feels unreal. Did you consider leaving even a hint of background?   Posted: 11/05/2021 05:55:02

Really like the lack of a background for this image as it ties in the white lines in the flower and enhances the insect. Very nice.   Posted: 11/05/2021 11:55:27

Nicely done.   Posted: 11/23/2021 19:41:58

Thanks for the feedback. I did wonder about adding a background but this is one of a panel in which all the images have white backgrounds as I was trying to emulate early botanical drawings. However, I do take your point about the image looking unreal. Food for thought!   Posted: 11/24/2021 07:14:02
